"I played them. I played them all. They're played, every single one of them. And not just the minis games, but the card and the boardgames, too."
Hello there! It’s May 3rd, which means it’s time for our yearly contractually obligated Star Wars post! In all seriousness, here at Rollacrit, we love our scruffy-looking nerf herders and space wizards. For many of us, tales of that galaxy far, far away fueled our childhood imaginations in a way that we’ve rarely seen since. For those who haven’t allowed Jedi mind tricks to sway them to the Dark Side, here are some games we recommend to bring your rebellious friends into the fold.
For the Family - Star Wars Villainous: Power of The Dark Side
Play as your favorite Star Wars villains in this 3-4 player game built on the popular Disney: Villainous system! As Asajj Ventress, Kylo Ren, Moff Gideon, General Grievous, or Darth Vader, pursue your evil agenda to achieve your unique goal before your rivals. Because each character has different goals and card decks, there’s plenty of replay value here, and we’re already seeing expansions being released for even more scum and villainy!
For the Magic-player - Star Wars: Unlimited
Jumping off from Fantasy Flight Games’ previous trading card game, Star Wars: Destiny, Star Wars: Unlimited is a fast-paced TCG that puts you into head-to-head battles with tons of iconic characters, locales, and ships. In addition to the usual formats of draft and sealed games, Star Wars: Unlimited also features a unique “Twin Suns” format, where 3-4 players enter a free-for-all to see who will emerge victorious!
For the Wargamer - Star Wars: Shatterpoint
Now, this one is a bit of a toss-up. Star Wars has a number of very popular miniatures games, all of them excellent, from the space dogfights and fleet action of X-Wing and Armada, to the ground-pounding conflicts of Star Wars: Legion. But, relative newcomer Star Wars: Shatterpoint is an accessible way to showcase the beloved heroes and villains of the Star Wars universe in a manageable and fast skirmish game without needing to get too deep into the weeds.
For the Role-player - Star Wars The Role-Playing Game
Speaking of toss-ups, which way you go with this one depends entirely on what part of Star Wars you enjoy. Recently returned from being out of print, Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars Role-Playing Game features three distinct stand-alone but compatible entries that all use the same core system and (unfortunately proprietary) dice. For those who want to explore the gritty underbelly of the setting, Edge of the Empire is for playing those smarmy scoundrels, smugglers, and bounty hunters. If you’re more into the militaristic feel, Age of Rebellion has everything you want for Rebel and Imperial officers, fighter craft, and capital ships. For those who are reluctant to leave the trappings of hokey religions and ancient weapons, Force and Destiny is focused on our favorite space wizards, the Sith and Jedi, and other force sensitives.
