5 Things We Wish We Knew Before Our First Gaming Convention | Rollacrit

Because you don't want to learn these the hard way.

There’s nothing like your first gaming convention. The anticipation, the crowd energy, the overwhelming number of things to see, do, and buy. Whether you’re heading to Gen Con, PAX, or a local gaming expo, one thing’s for sure: you’ll walk away with memories, loot, and probably sore feet. Here are five things we wish we’d known before our first convention—and that we still keep in mind every time we pack our con bags.

It’s Okay to Miss Things (Seriously)

The schedule is packed. You’ll want to go to every panel, play every demo, and visit every booth. But here’s the thing… trying to do everything means you won’t really enjoy anything. Pick a few “must-do” moments and leave space for the unexpected. Some of the best con memories come from wandering off schedule, like finding a hidden indie gem or stumbling into a spontaneous gaming session.

Vendor Hall Strategy Is a Must

The exhibit hall is exciting but can also be chaotic and overwhelming if you’ve never experienced one. It’s easy to lose track of time (and direction). If you see something you love, grab it! Some items sell out fast, and making your way back to the same booth twice can feel like a side quest of its own. We recommend scanning the map beforehand and noting the booths you want to visit. Pro Tip: Visit popular vendors earlier in the convention so you don’t miss out on items that may sell out!

Comfort Is Not Optional

You will be on your feet a lot. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. So is bringing a light, versatile bag to hold your essentials, whether that be snacks, water, a con map or guide, your badge, and whatever treasures you pick up throughout the day. And cosplay is always a good time, but make sure you can comfortably wear it for hours at a time—bonus points for costumes with pockets.

Plan Your Meals (and Bring Snacks)

The food situation at conventions can be unpredictable. Lines are long, options may be limited, and the costs can add up fast. Having a few on-the-go snacks and a refillable water bottle can save you a lot of stress and money. Consider looking into restaurants in the area ahead of time and making reservations, especially for dinner after the expo hall closes, since everyone else is looking to do the same!

You’ll Want a Bag You Can Depend On

You'll accumulate stuff between games, merch, maps, and exclusive loot, a lot of it. Ensure you have a sturdy, comfortable bag that won’t wear you out after a few hours. We’re partial to our Bag of Holding, of course, especially with the Velcro Merit Strap attached to show off your badges. But whatever you carry, make sure it’s practical, organized, and con-friendly.

Final Thoughts: Enjoy the Chaos

No two cons are the same, and that’s part of the magic. You’ll meet new people, try new games, and maybe even discover something unexpected about yourself! Take it all in, don’t stress the small stuff, and if you’re at a convention we’re attending… swing by and say hi!
